Chapter 7

More Human Than Human

New York, October 29, 1929

Cigarette smoke permeates an elegant hotel room at half past nine. It invades the crisp wallpaper and plush fabrics, marking the tale of a night well spent. Black satin and lace hang loosely upon my figure, cool to the touch as the chill of the Autumn air threatens to slip through the windows. My fingers tangle in my short, unkempt waves, desperate to give them some semblance of order after my romp in the sheets. Declan Lovejoy stirs in his sleep as I roll my dark stockings over my knee and latch them onto my girdle. My cigarette hangs from my freshly painted red lips, tendrils of smoke swirling above me in a little cloud. I glance over at my lover, smirking as his nose twitches from the scent, remembering how much he loathes my nasty habit, and take another deep drag.

I should make my escape before he awakens.

And yet, I remain nestled comfortably on the window sill, watching the fruit of my latest labors unfold. It all came together beautifully: all it took was one investor’s dinner and a touch of manipulation. Rich old men can never resist the wiles of a beautiful woman, especially one who could speak their language. Drop a few big names like Rockefeller and Kennedy and it’ll turn a few heads. Mention words like ‘over-value’ and ‘liquidate,’ and you’ve got their attention. Sprinkle a wicked spell in between, and you’ve successfully sowed the seed of doubt into the minds of corruptible men. I’m not one for politics and I am certainly not motivated by money, but if there’s one thing I’ve ever thrived on, it was my proclivity to wreak havoc on those who were.

Strong hands grip my hips as I suck in another drag. Lovejoy grabs the cigarette from my lips, tossing it into the ashtray as he presses himself against my back. A hungry groan rumbles from his chest as he pulls me incredibly close. So close, that the only thing separating us from becoming one was the hardness poking at my lower back.

“Insatiable, aren’t you?” I lean into his touch with a sly smirk, relishing in his soft lips and warm breath upon my neck.

“Can you blame me?” He whispers, lightly grazing his teeth over my skin. “Figured I’d have another taste before you inevitably disappear for another year or two.”

My fingers tug at his dark curls. “By all means, take your time.”

“Oh, I intend to.”

There’s something deliciously exciting about watching the world fall apart while taking it from behind. Something about the secrets that lie within the morbidity that ignites a fire so bright, only the touch of a man can smother it. The sheer fact that I caused all Hell to break loose fills me with unmatched satisfaction… And I relish in the pleasure as chaos engulfs Wall Street on this rather black Tuesday.
